Assigning numbers to graphical characters for storing and transmitting them with computers.

I know what a character encoding is.
I know why different character encodings exist.
I know which problems can occur if different character encodings are used for reading/writing the same file when exchanging data between different systems.
I can name one or more commonly used character encodings
I can make use of software of my choice to find out which character encoding a text based file is based on
